Ibiza is one of the most original and attractive islands in the World. Without ever loosing its charm as a peaceful hideaway, Ibiza has become a cosmopolitan meeting point of the swinging jet set and artists from all over the world. The island was made famous at the end of the sixties by the hippies, which endowed the Ibiza with the status of a counter culture paradise. Although Ibiza is now somewhat ill famed for its clubbing, the island has remained a quiet and peaceful place, free from mass tourism which has affected so many other Mediterranean destinations. The island has retained its "bohemian" charm and ancient Carthaginian influences, with its exotic white-washed cubic houses reminiscent of North Africa.
Everyday life in Ibiza is similar to other Spanish regions or any European countries, but its unique position in the Mediterranean, mild climate, history and traditions significantly affect the customs of the inhabitants. Street life is the backdrop for most social interchange and the majority of the year's fiestas and celebrations.
Lunchtime is between 2 and 4 PM, while dinner is served from 9 to 11pm. Bars and cafés generally open from 8 AM until midnight or later, and many of these offer tapas, small and varied portions of food that can serve as the basis of an informal meal or snack, accompanied by a drink. Balearic cuisine combines the quality and variety of produce found in this part of the Mediterranean, including fish and seafood, fruits, vegetables, meat, olive oil, wine etc., with foreign influences brought here by the different cultures who have come to live in these islands over the centuries. Ibiza has one of the highest ratio of fine restaurants in Spain, with a stunning offer for such a small place ranging from traditional island recipies, Spanish sepcialites and innovative Mediterranean cuisine to French, Italian, Arabic and Oriental gastronomy, paying tribute to its cosmopolitan reputation.
